While Swimmers Escaped Danger, Popular Photo Depicts Beach Patrol Dashing ‘Full Speed’ Towards the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong resident of Bondi, has always considered the famous coast as her own backyard. On that fateful weekend evening, she, like many neighbors, heard pops ringing out through the neighbourhood.

“Everyone did, but I thought it was too light and there was nothing visible,” Ching states. She left her residence, she observed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The faces they wore made it clear something was wrong.

As she stood on the street, conversing with a duo who had run up the hill still dripping wet, she became aware of someone approaching from behind. This turned out to be a lifeguard, dashing towards Bondi without shoes from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while transporting a medical device.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I just saw this blur of blue,” she recounts. “He was just flying past. He was alone moving in the opposite way that everyone was trying to flee, while holding that sizeable pack and without footwear … He was sprinting into something that undoubtedly every instinct would instruct you to run in the reverse way.

“Absolutely no pause, but just totally maximum effort racing.”

A Symbol of Bravery Amidst Crisis

The photograph Ching captured of the rescuer, since identified as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as one of many acts of heroism in the following of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, another beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, called “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to assist the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to work with other rescuers, officers and ambulance crews attending to many those hurt.

Community Response and Support

Doolan’s story was a single example among several to be shared by the neighbourhood, with the lifeguard clubhouse beside the scene of the attack serving as a makeshift treatment center. Accounts show that colleagues were also seen responding bravely, including rushing into the ocean to rescue people in distress.

Following the attack, messages of appreciation circulated widely. One post shared gratitude for the individuals who showed that “kindness will always conquer evil”.

The squad of rescuers later shared a message, explaining they were “still trying to comprehend what occurred”.

“Thank you all for your supportive messages and support. We are touched by the care directed at our responders,” the organization wrote. “When ready, we will tell our tales in the aim that it helps those impacted.”

Local Government Commendation

Waverley council, the governing body that hires many professional beach safety officers, stated that the team rose to the occasion from the second the shooting started until late that night.

“There have been so many powerful stories, but the viral image of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help assist the injured is extraordinary,” commented a mayor.

“The team demonstrate dedication every day in maintaining the safety of our internationally renowned coastlines secure for visitors, but what we saw on Sunday should be celebrated.

“While we mourn and grapple with the atrocity of this brutal and barbaric terrorist attack, I think it is important that we focus on just how much good we have observed in the presence of such hatred.”
