The Red Devils Set to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for United
Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her contract, is known as a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a major coup for the Women’s Super League side.
Departure from Munich was expected since she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top strikers. According to reports, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.
Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen the Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a major uplift to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Old Trafford
Securing the German international comes at a time when United appear to be building positive momentum.
Recent performances include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has brought additional activity:
- The signing of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the American league, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
