Thiago Pitarch has played seven games for Real Madrid, including five appearances in the starting lineup.

When an teenage makes club history in a pivotal Champions League match against Manchester City, it inevitably draws acclaim and attention.

In only his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the club - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the 15-time Champions League winners secured a three-nil last-16 first-leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also had his club debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted Los Blancos overcome the English champions in the midweek return to secure a last eight place.

Aged 18 years old, Pitarch was the club's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's record by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent From La Fabrica

This talent is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising protegees.

He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a positive impact.

He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they faced the senior squad, then coached by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced the previous coach in the new year.

Reports would later label the moment as "an instant connection," noting Pitarch excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and drive he added to the side.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Personality'

During the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso invited the youngster to practice with the first team and gave him minutes during pre-season.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the first day I began playing football, every day you go to train and every day you have a game," said Pitarch after his debut.

"I've just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the world and in the best competition."

Given a first start in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opening.

The teenager has seized it with displays that have belied his age and inexperience.

"He's a extremely fast player, and you can observe his capabilities," remarked Arbeloa. "He's incredibly dynamic, with great stamina, work-rate and movement."

The player's mindset has also impressed his manager.

"His greatest quality is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I realize fans might be surprised to watch him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had total confidence in him to do what he usually does.

"He will keep receiving chances with the first team. It is delightful to have a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up deeply involved in the local game, moving through youth setups before joining the club's famous youth academy.

He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, offering him the option to represent both nations at the highest level.

According to international regulations, footballers may appear for different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a official full international.

He has featured for the Spanish national team at youth level, representing both the under-19 and under-20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja made it to the last eight.

Despite this, he has yet to commit to either senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with keen attention.

Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision yet. Things are positive with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision in the near future."

His situation echoes that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal chose Spain, Brahim decided to play for the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, his attention is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and rewarding his manager's belief.

He featured for over an hour in the 2-1 win at City, which completed a five-one overall triumph and a quarter-final tie with Bayern Munich.

He was replaced by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the club pursue trophies to come.

Following his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is tipped to play a key role in that.

"Arbeloa handles me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I attempt not to overanalyze it excessively - I must deserve my playing time on the pitch," he said following the win at Manchester.
