Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on January 18 in the city of Melbourne.

Historic Return to the Australian Courts

Tournament officials announced on the weekend that the 45-year-old legend will grace the courts again at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the early stage before exiting in the quarter-finals to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Australian Summer

The tennis star had previously revealed in November her intention to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she was likewise awarded a wild card, two weeks before the Australian Open. The Australian Open added that Williams is also entered to participate in Hobart, Australia a following week, immediately prior to the action begins at Melbourne Park.

Her most recent visit in the city was in the year 2021, and she has been a finalist in the women’s singles on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the championship matches of 2003 as well as 2017.
