The King's Legendary Scoring Run Comes to a Close, However Los Angeles Pull Off Triumph Over Raptors.
James understood his monumental streak of reaching double digits was in danger. When it mattered most, however, he wasn't bothered.
The right decision was to pass the ball – and he executed. Following that play, his remarkable run finished.
LeBron's unprecedented run of over 1,200 straight NBA regular season games with 10+ points ended during a recent game, when basketball's greatest scorer was limited to eight points in the Lakers' 123-120 triumph versus Toronto. He made the decisive pass, feeding teammate Rui Hachimura to knock down a three-point shot to win the game.
“Nothing,” James replied when asked on the record concluding. “The team got the victory.”
A Selfless Play Secures Victory
He might have sought to clinch the contest – while also extending the streak – on the final possession, yet he opted to pass to Rui on the wing. Hachimura sank it, with LeBron celebrated immediately.
It's about playing the game the right way. You always make the smart play,” James explained. That has always been my M.O.. That is the way I was taught to play. That's what I've done my whole career.”
James is very conscious of how many points he's scored during a game,” said the team's head coach JJ Redick. He made the play like he’s done throughout his career.”
The Streak's Closing Chapter
James re-entered the contest for the final time at 5:23 remaining, the outcome and his personal record up for grabs. He had only six points from 3-of-15 shooting then.
He got a bucket with under two minutes remaining to level the contest but then missed a shot with 1:01 left which could have taken him to ten points.
He avoided taking a subsequent shot – even though he had a chance. Austin Reaves gave James the ball with a few seconds left, yet LeBron opted to make the pass instead of shooting.
“The basketball gods, when you play it the proper way, they tend to reward you,” Redick stated.
Reflecting on a Staggering Streak
This incredible run started over eighteen years ago. It stood as the greatest such streak the league has ever seen: Michael Jordan previously held a streak of 866 consecutive games with 10+ points, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar recorded 787, and The Mailman recorded with 575.
LeBron is such an unselfish player,” noted teammate a fellow Laker.
“He’s just playing the sport. He could have shot but given who he is on the court and his personality off the court, he executed the team play, dished to Hachimura and we won the victory.”
Scoring in double figures had typically been a guarantee early in the fourth quarter began. During James’s streak, he had achieved ten points entering the fourth on the vast majority of occasions before this game.
Yet two of those rare games below ten points after three periods took place just days before: He recorded nine points entering the final quarter versus the Mavericks on 28 November, followed by six points before the fourth quarter against Phoenix earlier in the week.
He succeeded in extend the streak against the Suns. In the following contest, it finished – and he celebrated regardless.
“I always just make the best play. That comes naturally, win, lose or draw,” James affirmed. “You make the smart play, the sports deities forever returning the favor.”
