New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.

“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His family, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”

The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he is reported as critical but stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”

New York police released video stills earlier this week of a suspect in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims according to reports.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday in the area between the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.

Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a child.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd did not participate during the current season, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with a shoulder injury that required surgery.

Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was expected to be an important component of an improved special teams group under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on early August and was carted from the field.

Boyd has remained around the team all season long while healing from his surgery.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with New York in March.
