Foolishness and Regal Arrogance Sunk Andrew, and It Could Continue Yet
This episode commenced with a single photograph, arguably the most significant ever taken of a royal family member.
Present was the Earl of Inverness, with his arm around a female youth, while a companion smiled knowingly in the backdrop.
Without that photograph, shot at a party in 2001, who would have believed the allegations of a young woman who said she was transported across the Atlantic and compelled to have cursory intimate contact with a individual of the monarchy?
An odd, revealing action by someone who had publicly asserted to have never been aware of her, said he could never have had intimate contact with her, and yet provided a substantial sum of his mother's resources to settle a protracted lawsuit.
Years of Controversy
Against this backdrop, talk of the royals acting firmly to cut Andrew off are wide of the mark. This affair has persisted for the majority of 15 years since that photograph, and another snapshot of Andrew strolling pleasantly with a notorious individual surfaced.
- Hubris: To what extent did his siblings, perhaps even his mother and father, realize that Andrew was so presumptuous?
- Questionable Associations: They must have understood, if his employees and the law enforcement were performing their duties, that he had some deeply disreputable associates given he publicly welcomed them to palaces.
- Financial Extravagance: If the family did not know about his personal conduct, they certainly knew about his overspending with public money.
Travel were documented in public records: private aircraft transfers from the estate to a country club and back again in time for dining, private flights instead of commercial flights, all for the benefit of "the travel enthusiast".
Existence of Entitlement
Additionally the presumption which demanded deference when he entered a space or the supreme consciousness about his honorifics used on his official documents in letters to his friends.
He avoided accountability while his mother, who inexplicably indulged him, was still surviving. The Queen did at least remove him of public duties and ceremonial ranks in the aftermath of his disastrous and, it is now clear, mendacious public statement six years ago.
Current Situation
Merely in the last fortnight that events accelerated, following the release of accounts giving more grim information of his behavior and that of his connections.
Additional revelations have again exposed Andrew's belief that he could avoid deceiving about his relationship with a notorious figure.
The public (and the journalists) were far more perceptive of the royals. There was not a single person of any significance to speak up for him, a consequence of all those years of presumption.
Institutional Fears
The more astute family members realized that. The primary concern is to pass on the institution, if not as previously at least complete and untarnished.
Over time the last 190 years trying to overcome the reputation of earlier rulers, demonstrating they are valuable, dutiful and responsive to their subjects.
His actions endangered all that in jeopardy in an era when deference and discretion is no longer adequate.
Consequences
Ultimately, the notoriously indecisive monarch was pushed additional. There was little choice. The institution had relinquished authority of the story.
Currently the loss of designations and the continued and life-long personal shame that will pain Andrew the most.
- Downgrading: Lowered to just a private citizen
- Prior Instance: The initial monarch to forfeit his titles in contemporary era
- Military Service: Particularly hurtful given his duty in the conflict
He is still a constitutional officer, in principle able to stand in for the monarch, and he is still in the succession to the monarchy, but neither of these will truly come to pass.
Future Prospects
Do individuals he comes across still acknowledge him? Could they still make mistakes and call him Sir? Would they say Mr,
Naturally, he is not withdrawing to an ordinary town, but to the monarchy's vast grounds at a royal residence.
In that place, he will be furnished by the king with one of the royal residences and given some sort of private allowance.
This is not his previous residence, where he paid a minimal payment for more than 20 years, and Norfolk is a bit remote, but even so it may not be adequate distance.
Outstanding Concerns
Matters remain unresolved. There are still files in the custody of American legislators to be revealed.
- Parliamentary Interest: Might lawmakers seek further action
- Monetary Probe: Or examine the misuse of state resources
- Criminal Investigation: There may even be a law enforcement inquiry into his actions
Perhaps for the present the reputational impact to the crown is restricted. The message from the royal household was plainly that the removal of honorifics was what the king, and notably other senior family members, sought.
A Shift in Position
The cessation of pretence that Andrew was making the choice himself. And, notably, the short announcement showed clearly that the royals were supporting the victim's narrative of events.
Furthermore, for the initial instance they ultimately showed concern for the survivors: "These actions are judged required, notwithstanding the reality that he persists in refuting the claims against him."
In the end it is entitlement, self-seeking and indolence that will kill the crown. In his foolishness, self-gratification and corruption, Andrew seems never to have learned that lesson.
