European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says
The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
