Afghan Rulers Utilized Left-Behind British Gear to Locate Local Nationals That Served With Western Forces, Inquiry Hears

An informant has revealed the Afghan leak inquiry that British authorities failed to secure sensitive devices permitting the Taliban to track down Afghans who collaborated with international military.

Data Breach Puts Numerous in Danger

The source, called Person A, stated that people concerned by the data leak were instructed to move homes and switch their mobile numbers to avoid detection from militant forces.

Members of Parliament are looking into the UK government's management of a massive disclosure of personal details affecting almost nineteen thousand Afghans who had asked to relocate to Britain to escape militant rule.

Data Disclosure Happened

A data file with private information, comprising identities, addresses and occasionally relative details, was accidentally leaked by a worker employed at British military command in February 2022.

The breach was discovered in late 2023, when identities of nine people who had applied to settle in the UK surfaced on social media.

Regime's Resources

It appears there is this misconception that the Taliban are without comparable resources that allied forces use,” the whistleblower testified to MPs.

All equipment was abandoned in Afghanistan; they have it. Once they acquire your phone number, they can locate your exact position. That is what intelligence groups achieved.”

During testimony about if militant forces owned advanced decryption, the source confirmed: “They possess all resources.”

Impact of the Information Leak

Preliminary research submitted to the investigation estimated that approximately fifty family members and colleagues of Afghans affected by the incident had been executed.

A superinjunction about the leak was enacted in late 2023 and blocked any information regarding the matter from public disclosure until mid-2025.

Safety Measures

Given injunction limitations, the whistleblower and the non-governmental organization associated with told affected households they were assisting that they had “suspicions that certain devices had been breached”.

“We recommended that they change residence where feasible and altered their contact details. That constituted the primary information that, should militant forces obtained this information, would lead to identification and capture,” the source testified.

Challenged Assessments

The source disputed that internal investigation conducted by a former official had been mistaken to state that the possession of the information by the Taliban was “unlikely to substantially change an individual's existing exposure”.

“The important fact is that these Afghans are not standing up to the Taliban; they remain concealed. The primary issue involves their previous employment.”

The source explained disturbing abuse endured by concerned people, comprising electric shock torture, interrogation techniques, and physical abuse.

“There are cases of young kids who have had limbs fractured to pressure households to say where someone is,” Person A stated.
